As we move further away from the Christmas season, the socks and tie I received at Christmas have taken their place in my closet. This is another way of saying that it is only barely in the realm of possibility that I’ll ever see them again. You can tell a lot about my Christmas by the fact that someone gave me a pooper scooper. Sadly, for me it may turn out to be the best gift I received.

How did my life come to this? Well, as Snoopy might have written, “On a dark and stormy night…” Actually I don’t remember when or where, but at some point my spouse said, “Why don’t we get a dog?” Those words would change my life.English Bulldogs

Yes, we now have a dog. Stonewall is an English Bulldog and I confess to having owned one before, so nothing that is happening is completely unexpected. My veterinarian is likely calling the Cadillac dealer now, assured that my bill alone will make the payments.

Bringing home a puppy has a number of similarities to bringing home a baby. Instead of a crib, we bought a crate. Unfortunately, Stonewall hasn’t taken to life in a crate and when inside he jumps against the side until we let him out. This meant several nights of no sleep for us since the crate was strategically placed next to my wife’s side of the bed. Instead of a playpen I bought an exercise pen that can be moved around. Thankfully, Stonewall likes to sleep in this and so we now have a permanently empty crate in the bedroom. Wonder if I could sell it on E-Bay?

Whether your dog comes from the pound, my daughter has two pound pups, or a breeder, be prepared to fork over some dough. Your purchases will include; a dog collar, dog tag, leash, bed, and training pads which cost more than diapers. Then there is food and treats and a variety of unexpected items such as shampoo, nail clippers and other stuff an old farm boy never thought was necessary for a dog.

Now my life goes something like this: I sit down on the couch with my handy laptop computer and, you guessed it, the dog needs to go out. I get up and take him out and play with him and give him a treat and put him back in his exercise pen. I sit down again and, you guessed it, the dog needs water. I get up and fill his bowl and resume my position on the couch, now the dog is barking. My wife engages in a game of: “What does the dog need?” Whatever she determines his needs to be I will likely be leaving the couch yet again.

Now some questions do arise. Why does the dog wake up at 6 AM? Not 7 or 8 or even 6:30, but 6 in the morning. This means half the time I’m so sleepy that bed looks good anytime after dark, and it gets dark real early in the winter. Why does the dog wait until I sit down to need a potty break? Is it the sight of me on the couch that makes him need to go?

Oh, yeah, about that pooper scooper. We have a small yard and it is difficult to believe how often and how much poop a puppy can poop. So here I am, scooper in hand, cleaning the front and back yards, and oops, the neighbor’s yard.

Of course, after all the complaining, I’m keeping him. In spite of obvious shortcomings one look at the face and you’re hooked.Bulldog health Keep all this in mind if your spouse suggests that the house is lonely since the kids are all gone.

Dogs and children make a great team when they are both trained to respect each other. Dog training your dog before you introduce a new baby is important. Your dog should be well behaved before you baby comes into the house. But if he isn’t, you can work with him even after the baby comes. The important thing is to make sure that your dog knows what is acceptable behavior and what is not. That is where a parent’s work comes in.

This work can begin as early as selecting the right dog and dog breed for your family. There are high energy dogs and docile dogs. While high energy dogs are wonderful buddies or your high energy children, they also require a lot of attention and work. In the same light, larger dogs are terrific to have on your child’s side but they can be a bit rough by nature and that could be an issue for your small children. Small dogs however, also tend to be territorial and can nip and bite small children. It is best to find something that will work with you and your family. Proper training is the most important aspect of owning a dog.

Children need to be taught that dogs need to be cared for carefully and should never be pulled on or poked. This includes the ears, fur, tail, nose, and paws of your pet. Make sure your child knows not to tug on any part of the puppy. While hugging is a wonderful show of affection by your child toward your dog, it is something that should be carefully discouraged. Dogs can take this to be a sign of aggression and attempt to defend themselves.

Additionally, while your dog may relish a good hug from your child, it is not a good idea for children to think that walking up to any dog and giving them a hug, This could be threatening for some dogs who are not used to this.

Teaching children to respect the dog and understand that the dog has needs and how a dog relates actions to its well being is key to helping the child keep himself safe. This having been said, children should never be left unattended when in the presence of a dog. Even the most well meaning action on the part of the child, could be construed as something threatening to the dog.

Teaching your dog what is acceptable is equally as important. Your dog desires to obey and please you. By nature they are workers and need a job. If you are clear in your direction with your dog, you will gain his respect and therefore training him to respect the children will be equally as important.

Even when you have worked the magic of teaching the dog and the child to respect each other, they should never be left unsupervised. Dogs and children speak different languages and an adult should always be present to translate. This is for your safety and for that of your children and your favorite furry friend.

What makes average versus Superior Boarding Kennels & Cattery Facilities

It would be a desirable situation if all Dog Boarding Kennels facilities were the same, the truth is that some are average and some superior. In fact, some facilities are subpar, which is unhealthy and dangerous for the animals being cared for. Most people are not experienced enough to know how to do proper research, and by accepting a second class facility, they end up with all sorts of problems after the pet has stayed there.

If this is a familiar situation for you, which has caused frustration and fear, but now you need to go out of town and once again, you need to look at Dog Boarding Kennels facilities, we can help. The process of choosing should not be one that causes extreme stress and with the information provided, you will know exactly the key elements of superior boarding kennels and cattery facilities, allowing you to enjoy your trip knowing that your furry friend is being properly cared for while gone.

We strongly recommend that after you have identified several possible choices for boarding kennels and cattery facilities, you visit prior to making a final decision. However, the best way to put them to the test is to show up unannounced during business hours. If you were to schedule an appointment, the owner and staff would have time to clean up, which would cover up potential problems. Of course, if you show up to any of the boarding kennels and cattery facilities and they turn you away, insisting you need an appointment, move on!

When visiting the various boarding kennels and cattery facilities, use your senses. As you walk through the facility, pay attention to things you can smell and see. If you notice the facility has an overpowering odour of urine or faeces, or even strong chemicals associated with cleaning products, be extremely cautious. Although any boarding facility is going to have some degree of odour specific to pet urine and faeces, if the smells are extremely strong it means the kennels and cages are not being properly cleaned. If there is a strong smell of cleaning chemicals, animals would likely become sick from breathing in the fumes.

You also want to look at the number of staff members you see working in each of the boarding kennels and cattery facilities. While some workers could be in another area grooming dogs, preparing meals, or cleaning outside runs, you should see someone inside working. If you cannot find anyone, never hesitate to ask the owner questions during the tour. For instance, you want to know the ratio of workers to dogs and cats or the number of workers in total that would be onsite during hours of operation.

One consideration when choosing Dog Kennels facilities that many people overlook is security. Although the animals would be housed inside in cages or kennels, you should look around to see if there is some type of perimeter fence. If not, ask specific questions about risk of dogs/cats escaping and ask if any have and if so, the process used for securing the animal. A boarding facility should never have an issue such as this so while one incident in years of operation could be forgiven, any more than would be serious cause of concern.

Finally, ask about the qualifications of each person working in the Dog Kennels facilities that would have interaction with or responsible for your pet. Some people might think asking questions is offensive to the owner but you have to remember that this is your pet, your best friend, and perhaps an animal that you consider a part of the family. Your pet cannot speak for himself so he relies on you to keep him safe and healthy. Therefore, an owner running a facility with honesty and integrity would never take offense to any question being asked.

Many young children go through the phase of wanting something small and furry to care for. The phase will last longer than stuffed toys, so chances are they’ll wantthe real thing, a puppy. If you’re extremely persuasive, you could possibly pass off a guinea pig as the ultimate furry friend. Still, not all parents are capable of being this convincing, and not all youngsters are so effectively hood winked. Look on the bright side. Being taught to care for a puppy dog, placing something else ahead of their own interests, will be a particularly beneficial experience for a child. And so now you must make up your mind exactly what kind of puppy dog is likely to fill this gap in your child’s life.

Just about all young puppies are sweet and also all pups grow.

Pedigrees:

By choosing a accepted breed you have a pretty good idea of the stature of dog you’ll have in about year and a half’s time. An additional advantage of a pure breed dog is that there are defining qualities. A Doberman puppy is very lovable but is going to most likely morph into an exceptionally determined character when fully grown. Unless of course you have got an exceptionally powerful and strong willed kid, this is not the breed you may want. Much can also be learned by simply viewing the puppy’s parents. If it’s parents are especially anxious as well as dubious around your child, this needs to be taken under consideration. Your dog breeder can assist you decide if the breed you have decided on is good for you and your family. Frequently a conscientious dog breeder will never offer a puppy if they don’t believe the new puppy will likely be going to an appropriate home. So, be ready to get vetted and also to heed guidance from an expert.

As with skirt lengths, particular breeds of dogs go in and out of vogue. Some of these breeds, on account of their attractiveness, are getting to be pretty inbred. Sometimes this may result in physical or even mental difficulties in the later life of the dog, but sometimes puppies are born with some of these complications. This is a excellent reason to study the breed that you are interested in and one of the advantages of selecting a pure breed dog since research is possible.

Just one final thing to consider, pedigree pups generally come together with a high-end price tag.

Mutts, Mongrels, Mixed Breeds:

However, you may make up your mind that a mongrel is perfect for your family. If it’s a pup from a shelter then the odds are that you shall not know the precise age of the pup or even just how enormous it intends to grow. You probably will not have it’s mother to look at, let alone the father. One particular indication for the size the pup may grow to can be seen by the size of his or her feet. Huge puppy paws, large dog. But a mongrel has escaped many of the problems of fashionable inbreeding. Odds are that this mongrel pup will grow into a physically durable and even tempered furry friend. A pure breed dog could have a shorter life span, possibly around A decade, whereas the mongrel may likely live for Fifteen years or much more. And so this is one instance when you do get much more for less money.

Now the fun begins. Involve your kids in all aspects of the puppy’s care. Your kids will have to be taught the best way to care as well as train the puppy but do not forget that the ultimate accountability is going to be yours. If you’re not willing to put any time in to help your child with your puppy, then you definitely should have bought the guinea pig. However, there are several good training courses available for you if you decide to choose a new puppy, so you can learn all about obedience training dogs
